Member Spotlight: Vicki White
August 29, 2010 No CommentsVicki White has been in the A/E/C industry for almost 18 years, is a longtime SMPS DC Chapter member, and was the 2009 recipient of the Golden Tuba Award. We recently had a chance to catch up with Vicki to get insight on her career and how she has benefited from SMPS.
How were you first introduced to SMPS and what motivated you to join?
I was first introduced to SMPS while I worked in the marketing department of Hitt Contracting in the early, early 90’s. I was encouraged to attend a meeting and I did. I instantly felt at home thanks to the wonderful people there who made me feel welcome in spite of my obvious “rookie-ness”.
How has SMPS helped you in your career?
I have made incredible friends through SMPS which in turn, has lead to many teaming opportunities, project leads and professional development opportunities.
Helpful hints to share with your fellow SMPS members?
Be nice to EVERYONE! It’s the right thing to do, the correct way to do business and makes people want to work with you. It sounds simple, but sadly, isn’t always in play!
Tell us something we would be surprised to learn about you.
That I was born in Santiago, Chile, speak fluent Spanish and really am this short!
What would you consider your greatest achievement?
Being recognized by my peers last year as the recipient of the Golden Tuba Award. That was awesome (not to mention a huge surprise!)
What would you consider your most difficult challenge?
Spreading myself too thin. I think that those in marketing have a tendency to want to be everything to everybody. Physically, this isn’t possible but it’s even harder to come to terms with the fact that you’re not Wonder Woman (or Superman).
Who would you consider as influential people in your career?
Barbara Ann Crutchfield, who was a long term marketing guru at Cannon Design, prior to her retirement a few years back. I owe her so much. She was my mentor, encouraged me to reach beyond my own perceived limitations, and proved to me that nice people do get ahead.
