Member Spotlight: Joe Monahan, CPSM

December 29, 2010 No Comments

Joe Monahan is a Marketing Manager with Alpha Corporation, an ENR Top 100 PM/CM firm and national leader in project controls services. Joe has a B.S. in Marketing from George Mason University. He is serving as the SMPS DC President-elect and is a Certified Professional Services Marketer with over 11 years experience in A/E/C marketing.

How long have you been working in the A/E/C Industry and how long have you been involved with SMPS?
I have been working in the A/E/C Industry since October of 1999. I became a member of SMPS in October of 2000 and joined the Membership Committee in 2002.

What aspect of being SMPS President are you most looking forward to?
Being referred to as “President”… Of course, I’m also looking forward to leading such a wonderful, organized and energetic group of marketing professionals.

If you could pick one SMPS DC Program our members shouldn’t miss what would it be and why?
I encourage our members to check out our phenomenal Lunch Programs we usually hold at Clyde’s of Gallery Place in Washington, DC. They offer opportunities for networking with key individuals within the A/E/C industry including senior executives representing various organizations in the public and private sectors as well as other professionals related to marketing in the A/E/C industry. Recent lunch program topics have included “University Procurement Forecast”; “Operational Trends and Highlights’; “Creating a Business Development Culture with John Doerr”; and “Working with the General Services Administration”. With a history of more than 100 attendees and the potential of selling out, be sure to register right away once you see the next lunch program topic hit your inbox!

What did you do at work yesterday?
I started working on a new proposal pursuit; organized and prepared exhibit booth materials for upcoming conferences; had a conference call; and attended an SMPS DC Chapter board meeting.

Do you have a favorite project you helped your firm win?
Logistical and Support Services for Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Project for the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). Alpha Corporation is responsible for supporting BJA’s efforts to oversee the implementation and progress of renovation and construction projects under the Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Grant Program. It is anticipated that this project will entail managing approximately 50 construction and renovation sites.

Can you recommend a strategy and/or device that helps increase your productivity?
Coffee is what gets me going! In addition, maintaining a daily task list in Outlook.

What advice would you bestow upon someone new in the industry?
I would suggest that they get involved with SMPS. SMPS is a great place to meet others new to the industry so you are not alone as well as very seasoned A/E/C professionals. In addition, SMPS is where I learned much of what I know about the A/E/C industry.

Where is your favorite place in the world?
My house. I know that seems trite, but usually after a hard day at work, the only place I really want to be is my own home.

Fast Facts about Joe:
Previous SMPS DC Board Position: Treasurer
Favorite DC Athlete: Chris Cooley with the Washington Redskins
Build Business Conference Dream Destination: Puerto Rico
Social Media Tools: LinkedIn and Twitter
Favorite DC Tourist Destination: Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting at President’s Park
