Exclusive tour of the National Mall with Project Executive Susan Spain
November 3, 2011 No CommentsOn November 10th, the National Park Service’s Susan Spain, National Mall Plan Project Executive, will lead the SMPS DC Chapter on an exclusive tour of the National Mall. During the tour, Ms. Spain will highlight recent projects and discuss the future of America’s most visited national park. Ms. Spain will discuss repairs to the Washington Monument, rehabilitation of the Reflecting Pool, and the park’s most recent addition – the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Ms. Spain has been intimately involved with the development of the National Mall Plan, officially released November 2010 by Secretary of Interior Salazar, which is a detailed action plan to enhance the utility, sustainability and beauty of the National Mall, the face of American democracy.
In the American spirit of optimism and hard work, and with an enduring belief that collaboration breeds change, the Trust for the National Mall, the non-profit partner of the National Park Service, leads the national campaign and fundraising effort to restore, enhance and preserve the National Mall for today’s visitors and future generations. Consistent with the National Mall Plan’s priorities, in September the Trust launched the Design Competition to ultimately initiate restorative work for ConstitutionGardens, Sylvan Theatre at the WashingtonMonumentand Union Square. Submissions to the Design Competition included some of the most recognized names in the landscape architecture and architecture.
