Every year we dare to go a little farther, climb a little higher in the quality and quantity of the programs and benefits we want to bring our members. Through the dedication and overwhelming commitment of our chapter leaders, volunteers and members we have learned that if you believe it, you can achieve it and there are no limits to what we can do.
Win or lose, we are proud of our accomplishments and the growth we have achieved. More importantly, we extend our sincere appreciation to SMPS National and the national SFE Committee for giving us the roadmap to follow for another amazing year. And of course Dr. Seuss for some inspiration– Oh the places we’ll go! We have a chapter to grow! Our next mountain is waiting. We need to start creating!

The SMPS DC Chapter leadership was forward-thinking in their decision to move the SMPS DC website to a content management system; not only did they take the reigns in regard to the content and direction of growth for the site, but they can now easily transfer that knowledge and control to successive Chapter Board Members. The redevelopment of the site also provided an opportunity to update the look and feel of the site to better reflect the strong branding used in event promotion materials and the newsletter.

2010-2011 was a banner programming year for the Chapter, and we extend our sincere appreciation to SMPS National and the national Striving for Excellence (SFE) Committee for giving us – through this award’s judging criteria – a means to frame our programs, management objectives, communications and finances to structure another successful program year.

SMPSDC received 1st place recognition for our quarterly Industry publication. This win was the culmination of two years (and eight newsletters) worth of hard work from the Chapter’s PR/Communications Committee lead by Chairs Emily Boyd and Frankie Bailey. Thank you to our members who served as contributors, editors, and promoters – your efforts did not go unnoticed!

The Education Committee, and Chair Ige Guobodia, works tirelessly to provide quality programs throughout the year, so when the Chapter was recognized as providing the best program in the nation (and Canada!) it was truly gratifying for all. The winning program, “The Social Media Revolution: Is it fit for the A/E/C Marketing Mix?” empowered attendees to make the decision whether social media is a fit for their firm and tangible ways to implement and maintain a social media program. This event inspired the Chapter to initiate a social media plan and subcommittee, and engaged many members (as well as the Board) who were new to this communication avenue. Special thanks to our social media mavens who lead the charge and continue to keep SMPS DC on the cutting-edge: Erin Orr, CPSM, Jennifer Bottomley, CPSM, Brian Reilly, CPSM, Hanna Tadesse, and Deborah Hayward.

For the second year in a row SMPS DC was honored to be recognized as a leading chapter by SMPS National. Submitting for the Striving for Excellence (SFE) award is a complex process, and results of programs, communications, member services, and growth must be tracked throughout the year. Congratulations to the SFE Committee, and Alison Carney, CPSM for guiding the SFE Committee to success.

The Striving for Excellence Award recognizes chapters for excellence in their management and service to members. The rigorous application process emphasizes a chapter’s program/education goals; management, membership growth and retention; communications; and financial health. Selection is based on what distinguishes one chapter from other deserving chapters within the association.
“It is such a wonderful honor to have this outstanding chapter recognized for its hard work and contributions to its members as well the A/E/C community at-large”,
states Audrey L. Johnson, President, SMPS DC Chapter.
SMPS DC was recognized for providing uncompromising value to the membership and the Society. The chapter continually offers leading edge educational programs benefiting marketers from all sectors of the A/E/C community and at all levels of experience and honors leadership and innovation of chapter members through four separate awards programs. The chapter serves the community it calls home through fundraising programs such as the annual holiday party in support of Children’s Hospital and by delivering Thanksgiving/Christmas dinners and additional assembled baskets of food to local families hit hard by the recession.
Over the past year, the SMPS DC Chapter has focused on finding ways to economize so that the programs remained excellent while maintaining affordable registration fees, leading to member retention and growth in what was a tough year for many associations.
