American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

About the Program
With the retail, commercial and housing markets virtually non-existent, and most states taking unprecedented hits to their capital budgets, many architecture, eng-ineering and contracting firms are looking for work in new markets, including work with the federal government through the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). GSA currently owns more than 1,500 buildings around the country, with a backlog of repairs and renovations totaling $8.8 billion. To help resolve this backlog, and to reinvigorate the economy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided $5.5 billion for the renovation of Federal buildings, courthouses, ports of entry, and the conversion of many Federal buildings to high-performance green buildings. This program will focus both on the opportunities available through the GSA, National Capital Region, as well as the procurement and contracting methods the GSA utilizes to acquire services.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, construction spending for healthcare projects in 2008 was $48 billion – up 7.1 percent from the previous year. Hospitals continue to renovate or build new facilities to accommodate new equipment, new operating rooms, new patient rooms and specialty-care facilities to keep up with current and future requirements. What are the future plans for healthcare facilities in the Metro DC Area? Leaders of Metro DC area hospitals shared their recent accomplishments, future work and their needs for the coming years.
