The Hills Are Alive 5K
April 8, 2012 No CommentsOn Saturday, March 31 several SMPS DC members rose before dawn and ventured to picturesque Fort Dupont Park for a morning of exercise, networking, and camaraderie. Nestled among residential neighborhoods just east of the Anacostia River, Fort Dupont was one of 68 forts constructed to defend the capital during the Civil War. Today, it is home to picnic areas, recreational facilities, and quite a few hills.
Clad in brand new, bright yellow SMPS DC Community Service t-shirts, our team jogged (and walked) its way through this challenging 5K. A boisterous cheering section and crates full of complimentary fruit awaited us at the finish line. Done by 9:00 and hungry from the early morning work out, we headed to nearby Eastern Market for a delicious networking brunch at Ted’s Bulletin restaurant.
Proceeds from this weekend’s race, sponsored by the DC Running Club, benefitted a six month training program for kids to complete a mini marathon and combat childhood obesity. Thanks to Melissa Blum and Crystal Stowe for organizing this great event. As part of the new Community Outreach Committee, we plan to participate in charitable and service-oriented activities like this approximately once per month.
