Dear SMPS DC Members:

On behalf of the Washington, DC Chapter Nominations and Elections Committee, I invite your nominations for open positions on the 2018-2019 DC Chapter Board of Directors. This call for nominations is an opportunity for you to help select our chapter’s future leaders. We hope you will thoughtfully consider who you would like championing the chapter’s efforts and invite you to nominate your peers or yourself.


What can a leader on the chapter Board expect?

The board of directors makes decisions regarding the chapter’s programs, financial health, community involvement and priorities. The board is comprised of the President, President-Elect**, Past President, Secretary**, Treasurer, and Directors-at-Large.

The Directors-at-Large serve two-year terms and chair one of the following committees:

  • Procurement
  • Education
  • Principals Roundtable/Senior Marketers Roundtable**
  • Special Events**
  • Career Advancement
  • Communications/PR**
  • Membership
  • Sponsorship
  • Community Outreach


** Positions currently accepting nominations for the 2018-2019 SMPS DC Board.

To be eligible for election as a Director-at-Large, the nominee must be a member in good standing as of the 2018 Summer Celebration program, which will be held on June 13, 2018. Director-at-Large positions have a term limit of two consecutive two-year terms, unless nominated to serve as an officer.

To be eligible for the positions of President and President-Elect, a member must have a minimum of one year of service on the board. To be eligible for positions of Secretary and Treasurer, a member must have served on the board as a voting member. The President and President-Elect positions are one-year terms and the Secretary and Treasurer are two-year terms.

Our board members are expected to commit 10-15 hours each month to SMPS; primarily for committee meetings, monthly board meetings, and chapter programs.

How does the nomination process work?

As the current President-Elect of the DC Chapter, I chair the Nominations and Elections Committee and will be joined by our current President, Pipper Moseley, and four other members with 2+ years of membership who represent the diversity and leadership of our chapter. The election of the new Board will be held at the upcoming Summer Celebration program.

  • Call for nominations March 30, 2018
  • Self-nominations are invited and encouraged
  • Submit completed nomination forms to Justin Jacobs, President-Elect and Nominations and Elections Committee Chair at jjacobs@gordon.us.com
  • Nominations must be submitted by or before COB April 27, 2018
  • Successful candidates will be notified upon determination and the slate will be presented for chapter vote at the Summer Celebration on June 13, 2018.

What if I'm elected?

All new Board member terms for the 2018-2019 program year will begin September 1, 2018. Chapter Board planning takes place throughout the summer, with newly elected Board members invited to shadow existing chairs at our July and August Board meetings. Some other dates to be aware of include:

  • New board announced June 13, 2018
  • Board Strategic Planning Session in July (date TBD)
  • New board member terms and the 2018-2019 program year begins September 1, 2018
  • 2018-2019 Kickoff Celebration in September (date TBD)
