On August 23rd, members of SMPS DC donned the bright yellow Community Outreach shirts and gathered at Jefferson Junior High to participate in the 10th annual DC Public Schools Beautification Day. Between cleaning classrooms, planting trees and running in to Mayor Vincent Gray, the volunteers got a chance to talk with some of the school's amazing teachers.

What our members quickly found was that many of the teachers at Jefferson were in need. Receiving only $50 - $60 in funding annually to purchase books and supplies, many of the educators had been trying to fill shelves with their personal collections. Unfortunately, in spite of their efforts, they were low on both supplies and appropriate books for their students.

In the spirit of fostering education and to help the students and teachers of Jefferson Jr. High, SMPS DC will be collecting books and school supplies at the Working with Colleges and Universities Lunch Program. We are looking for the following items:

  • New & Used Books appropriate for grades 3 - 10
  • Composition Notebooks
  • Pens & Pencils
  • Crayons, Markers & Colored Pencils
  • Colored Copy Paper
  • Poster Paper of all sizes
  • Glue Sticks
  • Construction Paper

If you are unable to attend the Lunch Program but would still like to donate, please contact Secretary Debbie Chen at hchen@louisberger.com to coordinate pick-up or drop-off.
