Now in its eleventh year, the Guru Guidance program pairs marketers at all experience levels and facilitates the sharing of ideas, experiences, advice, resources, tips, tricks, and aha moments. Held at HITT Contracting's headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, the 2018–2019 program kick-off brought out more than half of our mentor/mentee pairs.

The low-key setting focused on getting pairings acquainted and comfortable with one another. Attendees were first able to get a little networking in before the program began. Career Advancement Committee Chair Jen McGovern, CPSM, provided a program overview, outlined expectations, and spoke about the collaboration tool Slack. Pairs then got together one-on-one (most for the first time) and addressed the group as a whole to introduce and share something about their mentor/mentee.

The mentor/mentee pairs then rotated through activity stations set up throughout the venue where attendees could continue to get to know each other and begin the mentoring process. The “inspiration station” delved into discussions about best advice, favorite bosses, and what you like most about your job. At the “curious station,” pairs discussed what people would be surprised to know about you, what are important leadership qualities, and what you are looking forward to in the coming year. There were also game stations for Pictionary and Heads Up! as well as a whiteboard for goal setting. While not planned, a wine station materialized before the evening’s end. That’s wine without an “h” because with Guru Guidance, there is no room for whining, only pushing through and winning!

Before we knew it, the kick-off was over, and as mentors and mentees, we were well prepared for our eleventh season of Guru Guidance, SMPS DC style.

Special thanks to HITT Contracting for hosting the event, and to our Career Advancement Committee volunteers: Koren Stauffer, CPSM; Dayna Powderly, and Ronnie Hawkins, CPSM.
