With a room packed full of new members, board members and representatives from headquarters, SMPS DC held its annual new member breakfast. As each new member entered, they were warmly greeted by our President, Pipper Mosley, CPSM; Membership Director Michael Knowles, CPSM; and Membership Committee member Christine Tuomey.

New members enjoyed a brief period of networking and a full breakfast buffet at the historic Hotel Tabard Inn before the program started. The event began with enthusiastic welcoming remarks from Michael, who then turned the event over to Pipper to begin the insightful program.

SMPS Headquarters was represented by Membership and Chapter Services Vice President Mary Cruz and Coordinator Julio Santos, who reviewed the many tools available to new members at the national level. They also introduced the New Member Challenge, which educates new members about getting the most out of their membership by participating and being actively involved in their respective chapters. As an additional bonus, SMPS HQ donated several giveaways that included SMPS notebooks and SMPS t-shirts, and a grand prize certificate for the SMPS MARKENDIUM Labs, which is a six-part series of online courses covering timely marketing and business development topics.

Our next speaker was Lauren Kim, who gave a warm and heartfelt testimonial about her time over the past year as a new member and what it means to her to be a member of the DC chapter. She discussed how volunteering on the Education Committee has helped her get the most out of her SMPS DC membership.

Afterward, new members heard from board members and committee representatives who briefly described their committees, how their committee impacts SMPS DC, and ways volunteers typically get involved.

Then it was time to hear from the new members themselves. Pipper asked each new member to stand up and briefly introduce themselves and their firm, and describe what they are looking to get out of their membership. This led to additional conversations and further networking that continued after the event concluded.

The annual new member breakfast is designed to help members new to the AEC industry, as well as members that have joined the chapter within the last year, learn what SMPS is all about and what the organization has to offer. We Advocate, Educate and Connect…and SMPS is the only organization dedicated to creating business opportunities in the AEC industry.
