We all finally got a break from what seemed like a solid month of rain and were able to take advantage of the extraordinary views and cool breeze atop the impressive 2112 Penn. Event sponsor Skanska constructed this sleek and modern 11-story office building in the heart of Foggy Bottom, five blocks from the White House. The expansive rooftop terrace provided a perfect backdrop for the evening’s focus: building business through camaraderie among our members, and demonstrating marketing return on investment.

Justin Jacobs, SMPS DC’s President for the 2018-19 program year, took a moment to explain this year’s chapter mission, which is twofold. First, he addressed how we should concentrate on ways to demonstrate the value of marketing in the AEC industry outside the walls of SMPS. By focusing upcoming programming on seller-doer trainings and topics like “Making Your Marketing Department Billable,” members can shift focus outside of the day-to-day responsibilities of their marketing function to help contribute to our organizations in new and different ways. Justin also emphasized the importance of involving leadership outside of marketing and business development in these discussions – perhaps by having them attend our Lunch and Leads or other special events.

In addition to this first goal, the DC Chapter has the honor to play host to the national Build Business conference next summer. As such, Special Events Co-chairs Katie Gregg and Jessica Gillette, CPSM, will need the help of our volunteers to plan a truly unique celebration. Keep an eye out for a survey related to this topic, and be prepared for the Special Events Committee to solicit your ideas and help!

During kickoff, the Board raffled off items featuring SMPS’ new branding, launched at this summer’s conference in San Diego (another exciting change trickling down to chapters at the local level)! Then, we all had the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new contacts while snacking and sipping. A special thanks to our food sponsor, SGH, and beverage sponsor, Walter P. Moore.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather, a better venue, or better people with whom to ring in another spectacular year for SMPS DC. Keep checking your inbox and follow us on social media to make sure you don’t miss out on any great programs that might up your marketing game!
