On April 22, 2013 twelve members of SMPS DC traveled to The Children’s Inn, located on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda. Not only did they serve dinner to the 50+ sick children and their families staying at the Inn, they succeeded in distracting them from the strain of travel and medical treatments with an evening of fun activities. The volunteers provided a wonderful opportunity for families to eat together and ease the stress of adjusting to a new environment.

The Children's Inn at NIH is a residential "place like home" for sick children and their families. Kids come from across the country and around the world to stay together with their families in The Inn's healing environment while receiving groundbreaking medical treatments at the NIH, the world's leading biomedical research center. While the NIH takes care of the child's medical needs, The Inn tends to the child's heart, soul and spirit.

Volunteers from Affiliated Engineers, Global Engineering Solutions, AECOM, Shen Milson & Wilke, Cerami & Associates, MBP, Cox Graae + Spack Architects, and Insurance Associates came together to host an “All-American Night.” The Inn was decorated from floor to ceiling in red, white, and blue to show our patriotism and Global Engineering Solutions graciously sponsored a delicious buffet of traditional American fare from local catering company, Papa’s Bistro. A game of Bean Bag Toss was set up for the children along with a gigantic piñata filled to the brim with goodies. The success of this event can be measured by the heartfelt thanks the volunteers received and by the dozens of smiles that lit up The Inn that evening.
