This fall, we kicked off the 2017–2018 session of Guru Guidance, the SMPS DC chapter’s mentorship program. Now in its 10th year, the program pairs marketers at all experience levels, facilitating the exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as the sharing of industry tips and tricks.

In a change from prior years, mentors and mentees were paired prior to the Guru Guidance Kick-off. Rather than serving to determine pairings, this year’s event—held at Gilbane in Arlington—gave mentors and mentees the opportunity to get to know each other in a fun, dynamic setting.

Chelsea Cleary, Melissa Hollinshead, Carol Duke, Kyle Veater, and Kaitlyn Duffy enjoyed the Guru Guidance kick-off event at Gilbane.

We started off the evening with a discussion of the program and the expectations for committing to a regular meeting schedule. Koren Stauffer gave a testimonial of her experience in the program, getting this year’s participants excited for the program.

After the announcements, mentor/mentee pairs were invited to rotate through seven stations to participate in a variety of “getting-to-know-you” activities. From classic games like Pictionary, Heads Up!, and Guess The Celebrity, to thought-provoking discussions on personality, career, and communication styles, mentors and mentees spent the evening laughing and talking, and truly developing a solid foundation on which to build a strong relationship.

Abby Harrington and Morgan Zavertnik are all smiles after a few rounds of Heads Up!

Special thanks to Abby Harrington and Gilbane for hosting the event, and to our Career Advancement Committee volunteers: Abby, Koren Stauffer, Dayna Powderly, and Patsy Gordon.
