WBA-JenBottomley2x3-214x300.jpgJen, congratulations on being selected by the SMPS DC Chapter to attend SMPS University! Can you please touch on why you decided to apply for this grant? SMPS-U is a program that I discussed with my supervisor and expressed my interest in attending at my last review. Then when the Chapter offered the grant program, I thought the grant would be a great way to attend, especially in this tough economic time where budgets are tight.

What do you hope to learn from attending SMPS U? I believe SMPS University is the next step in my professional development. The curriculum of SMPS-U will give me a chance to experience more of the business-side of marketing and professional services. This is an area that I have only limited work experience and one that I would like to improve upon. My next career goal is to become a shareholder of my firm and in order to do that I need to strengthen my leadership skills and business management knowledge. I believe SMPS-U is such a smart idea because the courses are tailored to the A/E/C industry. The program also has instant credibility because it is taught by University of Maryland faculty.

Is there a specific session/module at SMPS U you are looking forward to attend? The leadership sessions and the financial sessions are what I am looking forward to most. As marketing professionals, we sometimes wear the creative hat first, not the business hat. I am looking forward to strengthening my knowledge base of the financial side of our business.

How has being a member of SMPS influenced you both professionally and personally? I have been a member of SMPS since 2000. Initially, SMPS was a way for me to meet people since I was new to the area and the industry. 14 years later, SMPS continues to help me become a better leader, communicator and colleague. I have developed some of my strongest friendships and professional partnerships through SMPS. SMPSers are some of the most enthusiastic and creative people I’ve ever met. I never leave an event without learning something, being energized, and meeting someone new.
