On Thursday, January 19th, SMPS DC was given the opportunity to tour the National Science Foundation Headquarters. With a quick safety check of our PPE, we were ready to tour the 660,000-sf LEED Certified building that is currently under construction.

Balfour Beatty Project Manager Tim Boerschlein and his team, including Bill Whitenhill, Director of Quality Assurance with WDG Architecture, were excellent tour guides and gave us a lot of insight as to what goes on behind the scenes on the project. From the DIRTT demountable walls to the insulation made from old blue jeans, this project had some really unique features that were not only sustainable but were also features the group had never seen before. The tour began with a very informative presentation and a little background on the job itself. We then proceeded with the tour and saw the entrance lobby, the completed fifth floor, conference rooms, fitness center, and the data center, which was very interesting. The favorite space on the tour was the executive wing on the 13th floor that showcased breathtaking 360-degree views of the Alexandria and Washington, DC skyline.

After the tour, the group and several Balfour Beatty representatives enjoyed networking and drinks at Ted’s Montana Grill.
