The SMPSDC New Member Breakfast on May 28th brought the organization’s newest members (and prospective ones) together with AEC marketing industry pros in an intimate setting at The City Club Washington.

Highlighting the event was the attendance of SMPS National CEO Ron Worth. As you can imagine, Ron had a lot to say about the organization (and its best chapter!). Throughout his 15 minute informal talk with the attendees, Mr. Worth stressed the importance of building relationships for developing both business and knowledge. He recounted times during his first foray into professional services marketing in which he relied on the help and guidance of others in the industry, specifically within SMPS. Mr. Worth closed his remarks by encouraging all of that morning’s attendees to get involved, build relationships, and to always help a fellow member in need, as “[s/]he who gives, gets.”

new-member-breakfastAn appropriate follow-up to Mr. Worth’s passionate address, SMPSDC President Tara McCarthy spoke next about the strength of the chapter as a whole. Emphasizing just how great of a chapter SMPSDC is, in both quantity and quality, Mrs. McCarthy echoed many of Mr. Worth’s sentiments; the importance of involvement, the return on investment of time and energy, and the comradery gained from active participation in the organization both locally and nationally.

The opening remarks were followed by a presentation of chapter initiatives and benefits by Membership Committee Co-Chairs Christa Montgomery and Jason Moskowitz. Highlighted in that presentation were chapter and national initiatives towards member education, professional advancement, recognition, and knowledge resource offerings. That presentation can be found here.

After brief introductions by all of the event’s attendees, former and current committee chairs Katie Garrett, Shelley Spencer, Laura Ewan, Shaylee Carmona, Deborah Hayward, Jennifer Boyer, and Debbie Chen all spoke briefly of their experiences with SMPSDC and their advice to members. In short, that advice was to get involved, join a committee (which many did, soon after the event) and do not be afraid to ask questions.

SMPSDC would also like to thank their sponsors that make events like The New Member Breakfast possible.
