New Member Spotlight

What inspired you to join SMPS and what are you hoping to get out of your membership?

I was encouraged by my manager and coworkers to join when I first started at HITT. I am looking to gain more insight on the AEC industry, better my marketing skills, and create to connections with people outside of my company.

What has been the most valuable part of your membership so far?

Joining a committee has helped me become more of an active member and keep a pulse on what SMPS is offering on a regular basis.

What got you into the AEC industry and what keeps you here?

I was previously in the marketing/proposal world but was new to the AEC industry. I was looking for both a company and team that would be a good fit for me within an industry that I had interest in. I learn something new daily, whether it is in InDesign, a new construction term, or even just how to better communicate with all different personality types. I can attribute my desire to grow within this industry to the work that I do and the people that I work with.

What has been your favorite SMPS DC or SMPS event?

I enjoyed the Summer Celebration which included the awards. It was great to see and celebrate the accomplishments of all the firms within. Plus, it’s always nice to have a crowd that can truly appreciate the hard work of a project that had likely taken months on end to see through.

What part of the SMPS mission to Advocate, Educate, and Connect most resonates with you and why?

Educate- the Education Committee (shout out to Kim and crew!) puts on regular events that cater to all professional levels. Attending the educational sessions has been a great resource for me. Whether the topic is specific to marketing or the industry, I have always been able to take something away from each event.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned through SMPS (an event, speaker, or fellow member)?

You get what you put into it. You have to be willing to spend the time to attend events and get involved in order to benefit from the organization. I’m still working on this 😊

Best work-related advice you’ve ever gotten?

Stop apologizing.

Who is your professional idol? Why? (Can be a big celebrity name or someone you’ve worked with or anywhere in between.)

So many options but I’ll go with Reese Witherspoon. She has totally changed her perceived image as an actress to producer, entrepreneur, and a strong activist who speaks to her passion for female empowerment. Highly recommend checking out her media company Hello Sunshine online, which is dedicated to female storytelling.
