Let's Get to It

What inspired you to join SMPS and what are you hoping to get out of your membership? At first, probably like most, a coworker encouraged me to join. This year, I’m hoping to have the opportunity to join a few committees and be more involved! Why? Well I’m a strong believer that motivation is contagious, whether it's within your professional or personal life. Since joining, I’ve noticed that the members of SMPS DC are consistently supporting one another and motivating each other to grow as strong individuals and as professionals in the AEC market. Whether it’s by giving back to the local community or by furthering our education to be better business professionals - SMPS constantly shows me that these individuals are contagiously motivational!

What has been the most valuable part of your membership so far? Resources and mentorship! Like most (hopefully) I’ll have an afternoon where I feel stuck and can’t get past that “marketer's block”. Having resources through SMPS on a national and local level has been such a blessing. Sometimes it’s as simple as bouncing ideas off a peer for an upcoming event or asking advice on submitting a tricky IDIQ.

What has been your favorite SMPS DC or SMPS event? The SMPS DC Annual Golf Tournament at 1757 Golf Club last spring - mostly because I shocked even myself when I won the Women’s Closest to the Pin challenge!

What part of the SMPS mission to Advocate, Educate, and Connect most resonates with you and why? Connect! I love having a larger sense of involvement in an organization that gives you the opportunity to meet not only peers and mentors of a like-minded nature, but the opportunity to make new friends.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned through SMPS (an event, speaker, or fellow member)? Jobs, opportunities, and deadlines will come and go, but the relationships you make along the way will always be a constant!

Best work-related advice you’ve ever gotten? At my very first job post-undergrad, I was given the opportunity to create and design a 6-month ad campaign for WMATA to be displayed on metro platforms, in rail cars, and in buses - plus a nice little banner ad online, too. I spent hours on my designs and nervously presented it to my boss. He said he really liked what I had come up with, then asked, “Lindsey, this is good - really good. How can you make it great?”

I went back to the drawing board and started from scratch, pushing myself out of my comfort limits to come up with something I was truly proud of! I even decided to teach myself Adobe Flash, creating my first ever animated banner ad.

That question has stuck with me ever since. His advice to push myself further and challenge myself has been the greatest advice I’ve ever received. To this day, I’ll stop and ask myself “How can I make this great?”.
