photoAudrey is with Gilbane Building Company, an international company that provides construction management services. Audrey was president of SMPS DC in 2009 and we were delighted to hear how being a leader for the SMPS DC Chapter has made a difference in her career.

How has SMPS helped shape your career?

When I started in this industry, I had no frame of reference for what the professional services industry entailed. SMPS provided a strong foundation that has been invaluable in my development. The educational programs, networking events and national conferences have provided a platform to enhance my professional development.

How did you get started in the A/E/C industry?

I started my career with Leo A Daly as a Marketing Assistant. I learned about the value of client service and the importance of assembling the right teaming partners. I did my first all-night proposal marathon for the renovation and expansion of National Airport. Fortunately, we were awarded the project.

Mentor(s) you most admired and why?

That’s easy. Dianne Schachner. She introduced me to SMPS and guided my career even after I left Leo A Daly. She is a seasoned marketer who accomplished a great deal during her career at Daly and successfully led the business development efforts of the firm that made them a pre-eminent A/E firm in this region.

Do you have any advice for the younger members in the A/E/C industry?

Listen and lead. Listen and learn from other professionals in this industry that have been able to develop a strong reputation and successful track record. Be involved in SMPS and take on leadership opportunities when they are presented.

What would you consider your greatest achievement during your term as SMPS DC’s President?

My greatest achievement was developing a strong partnership with the National Office; providing outstanding programs to our members that resulted in our first Striving for Excellence Award and recognition for those that worked tirelessly to achieve all of the goals we set out to accomplish that year. A president is only as good as the board that supports and implements the vision that the president has. My board was composed of rock stars that I was proud to serve with.

What are your SMPS takeaways?

This is an organization that provides so much for marketing/business development professionals in the A/E/C industry. We need to stay involved, give back and be committed to the mission of advocacy, education and connection.
