Hello, sunshine! In case the cherry blossom festivities and hoards of tourists didn’t give it away, it’s now officially spring in the District. I love this time of year in the city – riding my bike to work, enjoying longer days and happy hours outside, and cheering on the Nats without having to suffer in the 90-degree heat. But mostly I love this time of year because it signals the start of something new. Spring is about renewal, and here at SMPS DC, we’re embracing it in every sense of the word.

Fresh Perspectives

It’s time for SMPS DC to start planning efforts for the 2017-2018 program year. We’re always looking for ways to improve and invite all members and potential members to join us on Wednesday, May 3rd for our annual Town Hall and Open House at LandDesign in Alexandria. This event is an opportunity for members to share their feedback and ideas with the Board of Directors, and we look forward to an open and positive dialogue that will inform this summer’s strategic planning session. Join us for free networking and happy hour in LandDesign’s new space, followed by a moderated conversation that will explore fresh ways SMPS DC can advocate for, educate, and connect our members.

In the spirit of fresh perspectives, the call for nominations for the 2017-2018 SMPS DC Board of Directors is out, with the April 19th deadline fast approaching. This is an opportunity to join a committed group of volunteers in shaping the future of our chapter. So if you’re looking for a way to challenge yourself as a leader, give back to SMPS, and expand your network, we encourage you to consider nomination for the SMPS DC Board. If you have any questions or want to learn more about eligibility or the SMPS DC Board experience, please contact President-Elect Pipper Moseley, CPSM.

Fresh Competition

The start of spring means the return of golf season, and we couldn’t be more excited. This year, SMPS DC kicks off golf season with our Golf 101: Golf Clinic and Networking event at Pinecrest Golf Course on Thursday, April 13. Dust off your clubs and join us for two hours of hands-on instruction designed to help you survive nine holes on the course.

This clinic will have you feeling “alright” about your golf game just in time for Be the Ball: SMPS DC’s Annual 9-Hole Golf Tournament scheduled for May 9th at 1757 Golf Club. Create your own team or sign up as an individual golfer to join us for this fun-filled Caddyshack-themed day of networking on the golf course. There will even be a prize for best Caddyshack-inspired outfit, so bring on the obnoxious plaids and remember to keep an eye on your ball!

Fresh Look

Last week we held a kickoff meeting for SMPS DC’s new website effort. Led by our consultant team from MilesHerndon, this session brought together current and past board members for a discovery session focused on discussing how, why, and when people visit the chapter website – including a review of all the great feedback we received as a result of December’s website feedback survey. Our goal is to create a beautiful, easy-to-use site that represents and serves our members, and we look forward to introducing the new SMPSDC.org later this summer. Stay tuned for more updates as the project takes shape!

Though it’s only April, I’m already starting to feel my year as SMPS DC President winding down. But instead of being sad about how quickly the time is flying, I’m excited for what comes next. Our chapter is in a constant state of renewal, and always should be. It’s the fresh ideas, energy, and perspectives that continue to challenge us and make us better.
