Can you believe 2016 is almost over? Seriously, how did this year fly by so fast? And while it will undoubtedly be remembered as a year of great controversy and change throughout the world, for me, 2016 is memorable for much more personal reasons – becoming an aunt, taking Communiqueso on the road to Build Business with my partner in crime, and fulfilling a longtime professional goal of serving as SMPS DC Chapter President (viva #EnFuego!).

This year has been an eventful one, and like most years, it has also been a bit hectic. We all seem to keep getting busier and busier. More deadlines to meet. More events to attend. More content to produce. More things we want to do that we just can't fit in. The life of a marketer has always been a fast-paced one, but it's starting to get a bit out of hand, amiright?

That's why it's more important than ever to force ourselves to slow down every once in a while, and take a look back at all that we've accomplished. Each December, I take advantage of work slowing down around the holidays to reflect on the work my team and I did that year. What started as a review prep exercise for a promotion I desperately wanted has since become an annual tradition that allows me to look beyond my daily checklists and see what really matters – our impact. Even better, this document continues to grow year after year, and serves as evidence that we as marketers have done the same.

Speaking of reflection and impact, the call for entries for SMPS DC's 2017 Chapter Marketing Communications Awards was announced last week. The MCAs are the "only awards program that highlights the critical role and immense value marketing professionals bring to the design and building industry," and we're proud to offer this program at the local level to showcase the amazing talent here in DC. There's no better way to gain recognition for your work and your team, and we hope you'll consider submitting to this year's competition. The deadline for entries is January 31st and more information about categories and requirements can be found on the SMPS DC website.

In the spirit of more meaningful reflection this holiday season, SMPS DC is continuing our support of Wreaths Across America by participating in the annual wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday, December 17th. We hope you will join us – and the many thousands of other supporters – to remember fallen U.S. veterans and honor those who serve our country.

If the pattern holds, next year promises to be just as busy, if not more, as this year. But before you get started on those New Year's resolutions, I encourage each of you to make time over the next few weeks to slow down, look back, and toast to all the great things you accomplished in 2016.

Until next year,

Laura Ewan
President, SMPS DC
