Hello from Indianapolis! This week I join SMPS members from DC and across the country at the society’s annual conference, Build Business. This will be my fifth year attending the conference, and it just keeps getting better and better. For me, it’s not just about the stellar programming (though I hear they have some exciting changes in store for us this year). It’s about connecting and reconnecting with my fellow SMPS members. The energy and inspiration I take home from my conversations with others at Build Business help set the tone for my entire year. As a chapter, we strive to recreate the Build Business experience at the local level, providing an environment where all of us can learn, connect, and get inspired.

There’s no such thing as summer break for those of us in the proposal world. That’s why later this month, SMPS DC will be hosting a Strategic Proposal Development Workshop led by the one and only Frank Lippert. Frank is an SMPS Fellow, CPSM, and former National President who brings more than 25 years of experience to his work as partner and founder of Go Strategies, LLC. Though this program is already sold out, we are still accepting names for the waiting list. Want to see more programs like this? Reach out to me, President-Elect Pipper Mosley, or incoming Education Director Susan Merrigan to let us know what topics you’d like to see on the calendar for next year.

Calling all volunteers! Mark your calendar for our annual Volunteer Appreciation event on Wednesday, August 30. Join us for an afternoon game cheering on the Nationals at Nats Park while you connect with fellow volunteers and celebrate another great year for SMPS DC. Watch your inboxes and our chapter Slack channel next week for more information on how to RSVP.

Build Business isn’t the only conference bringing you top tier programming and networking opportunities. The SMPS North East Regional Conference, MERGE, is coming to Baltimore in 2018, and the planning committee is already hard at work to make this the most inspiring conference yet. The call for speakers is out now, and the committee is seeking to curate engaging content and an experience that challenges the AEC status quo through exposure to people, ideas, and examples from leaders and progressives within and outside the industry. Download the call for speakers today to learn more about MERGE and how to submit. Not a speaker, but want to get involved? A call for volunteers for all conference committees will be coming out soon, so keep an eye on your inbox!

Build Business promises to be an amazing and jam-packed three days. Not in Indy? Not a problem. You can follow along with us all week on social media at #smpsbb17 as we share our favorite photos, tips, and takeaways from the conference.

Until next month,

Laura Ewan President, SMPS DC
