In case you missed it, I just returned from a whirlwind weekend in Detroit judging SMPS HQ’s 2017 Marketing Communications Awards with fellow SMPS DC members Kate Attilio and Jen McGovern. Some people thought we were crazy for driving the nine hours each way to spend our Saturday tirelessly reviewing awards submittals. But at the end of the day, crazy or not, we all agreed the trip was totally worth it. After three days of networking and reviewing some of the most brilliant and creative work coming out of this industry, we left with new friends, new ideas, and a new appreciation for the MCA program itself.

For me, the experience really drove home the value of peer review and recognition. And that’s why I’m excited that SMPS DC is also approaching awards season.

The Ginny Solomon Golden Tuba Award

The call for nominations for our annual Ginny Solomon Golden Tuba Award is out, with nominations due May 26th. The Golden Tuba is one of SMPS DC’s oldest traditions, and most prestigious honors. First presented in 1981, the award recognizes a current SMPS DC member whose accomplishments and impact on our profession set the standards for excellence. Though a bit big for a desk, the award has graced the offices of a long list of SMPS DC legends – those whose careers and examples have blazed a trail for us all. Now it’s time to add another name to the list. Who is up to you.

The Rising Star Award

Also due May 26th, nominations for The Rising Star Award are limited to SMPS DC members with less than five years of experience in the industry. Like its recipients, this award is newer to our chapter – but no less important. The Rising Star recognizes chapter members who have shown dedication to SMPS DC through committee involvement, demonstrating the potential to become one of the industry’s shining stars. Nominate someone today, and help us shine a light on a deserving volunteer and future leader.

SMPS U and Pay-It-Forward Grants

Recognizing our members isn’t just about awards. SMPS DC also offers full grants to two of the Society’s most valuable and coveted professional development opportunities – SMPS University and SMPS Build Business, hosted in Indianapolis this July. Have you wanted to attend one of these programs, but it’s just not in your firm’s budget? Now’s your chance to pay your own way. Submit your application for the SMPS U and Pay-It-Forward Grants before May 26th for your chance at one of these career-changing experiences.

Whether you’re nominating a mentor, friend, or yourself, we hope you will join us to cheer on this year’s recipients at our Summer Celebration on June 13th at Tonic in Foggy Bottom. In addition to the awards and grants mentioned above, we’ll also be recognizing outstanding committee members with our New Heights Volunteer Service Awards and presenting the 2017-2018 Board of Directors for approval. Register today and join us to share in this celebration of exceptional members and chapter milestones.
