I’m often asked how a person can get the most out of their SMPS membership and the simple answer is to volunteer. Whether you’re new to A/E/C industry, new to a business development or marketing role, or seasoned member - now is the perfect time to volunteer!

Volunteering with SMPS DC

SMPS DC’s growth and success is built upon the vision and commitment of our volunteers. I’m so lucky to lead such a passionate and committed Board and group of volunteers that collectively pour innumerable hours, words, images, and ideas into this organization. We can’t do it without you, and each of you have something unique and valuable to share.

What holds people back from volunteering? Some may think they’re not experienced enough, or others think they don’t have the right skills or enough time. Others may feel that everything is running just fine and the chapter doesn’t need their help.

I encourage you to consider getting the most out of your membership by volunteering - share a great idea, sharpen skills relevant to your current work, or explore a passion or talent that may not be a part your day-to-day job responsibilities. Please visit our committee webpage or contact me or any of the committee directors to learn more. It’s not too late to get involved – attend an event, volunteer, sponsor, become a mentor or a mentee, and promote SMPS awareness throughout your firm.

Guru Guidance

We heard your feedback and revamped our signature Guru Guidance program! The heart of this free, yearlong mentorship program has stayed the same, but the delivery is new and exciting. Guru Guidance pairs SMPS DC chapter members with other members at varying levels of experience, facilitating relationship building and mutually beneficial professional growth. This year, our chapter has adopted a more formal application-based program. Potential mentors and mentees need to fill out an online application by Monday, October 23, 2017, which will enable us to make more impactful matches. We will host several events to foster group discussion and will encourage participants collaboration on a dedicated Slack channel.

Current Events

We started the month of October by volunteering at the NIH Children's Inn. On Columbus Day, I had the pleasure of joining our Community Outreach Director Melissa Blum as she gathered a group of chapter volunteers to serve dinner and complete crafts with children and their family members staying at the Children’s Inn while undergoing life-saving treatments.

We are excited to bring you new opportunities to connect and engage! We will be touring one of the most unique projects in the District – Capitol Crossing. With its expansive decking over an active highway, to its innovative design with the environment in mind, it is a development unlike anything the District has seen before.

Later in the month, we will engage regional experts to learn what’s new on the Northern Virginia Education scene, which will include panel members representing both K-12 and higher education institutions. Our monthly calendar would not be complete without time to connect and bond – the annual New Members Breakfast occurred yesterday and our first Guru Guidance mentoring event is currently in the works, so stay tuned for more information.

Our chapter is striving to develop members not just within their current role and responsibilities but by also helping members grow professionally to move their careers forward. Amplify your influence within your marketing team and firm by attending our November educational program discussing Creating (and Sticking to) a Marketing Budget. Our Senior Marketers Round Table (SMaRT) series also kicks off next month with an exciting topic: The Modern Marketing Team.

Please join us in our mission for SMPS DC moving forward. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I am incredibly excited for the months to come.
