On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to the SMPS DC 2017-2018 program year!

Each spring, the president-elect is asked to start thinking about their theme for their presidency; in other words, the one thing they hope to achieve or focus on during their term. For me, this choice was easy once I reminisced about my experience and growth as a member of this organization. Throughout my membership, I have witnessed great leaders, whether it be past presidents, board members, committee chairs or even committee members, stepping up and moving this organization forward, making it a little bit better than before. I wanted to build upon this and the SMPS vision statement, “Business Transformed through Marketing Leadership”, and make Leadership my theme for the 2017-2018 program year. When our incoming Board of Directors met in July for our annual Strategic Planning session, I asked each to set three leadership goals for the upcoming year based on the charge - Lead Yourself, Lead Others, and Lead the Chapter.

Lead Yourself, Lead Others, and Lead the Chapter

We brainstormed how we as chapter leaders could be more productive and responsive, whether it be through training, practice or experience (Lead Yourself). We examined ways that we could empower our committee volunteers to step up and assume leadership roles in training events, committee activities or organizational functions and thus nurture our chapter’s future leaders (Lead Others). Finally, we talked about how, as an organization, we could better collaborate with industry peers to set the bar for marketing excellence (Lead the Chapter). With these goals in mind, the Board has been hard at work planning an outstanding program year of educational, mentoring, leadership development and networking opportunities addressing the needs of members at all stages of their career and that can be incorporated into their daily work life.

I truly believe that marketers at all levels have the power to lead and transform their business environments when they possess the necessary skills. Now, whether you’re a past chapter leader, current member, or guest attending one of our events for the first time; know that we are here to helpfully empower your SMPS experience. And it’s not too late for you to get involved, as all of our committees are seeking volunteers.

SMPS DC's 35th Anniversary

Additionally, this year marks our chapter 35th anniversary! Our kick-off and 35th anniversary celebration held on September 12 was magical! Our theme for the event was Our Future is So Bright because we could not pass up a great 80's song reference and our evening was truly brilliant. We were honored to have in attendance HQ staff; leaders from the DC, New York and Maryland Chapters; and finally past and present members, volunteers, sponsors, colleagues and valued business partners. We were especially lucky to have SMPS DC’s first Chapter President, Mr. Phil Tobey, as our honored guest. He shared some great stories about the chapter’s early days, as well as his original vision when the chapter first started over 35 years ago. Phil was instrumental in starting our DC Chapter and I’m proud to build upon his legacy of leadership to better serve our members.

Upcoming Events

We’re excited for an amazing year of networking, education events, business opportunities, and business transformations and we‘re off to a great start! Some of the upcoming events include:

  • Connections Matter: Sponsors Only Happy Hour - Next week on September 21, we are hosting this free event to show our gratitude to our sponsors by connecting them with the area’s leading developers in a relaxed setting conducive for networking and true rainmaking.
  • Educational Scavenger Hunt and Lunch - On September 28, this brainchild of our B5 (Bring Back the Best of Build Business) grant winner, Jessica Gillette, will take place in the DC Sculpture Gardens and is definitely an event not to be missed! SMPS CEO Michael Geary, SMPS National President Nancy Usrey and I will be attending and presenting.
  • Finally, the month of October has something for every member: starting with volunteering for the Children's Inn at NIH Family Dinner; hosting our annual New Member Breakfast; providing leads and procurement insights with a luncheon focused on the Education Market in Northern Virginia, and offering a Project Tour of one of DC’s most unique projects – Capital Crossing.

It’s going to be a fantastic year, so stay tuned and visit our newly re-designed website for updates.

Our future as a Chapter is only getting brighter!
