The DC Chapter is committed to giving back to our community and we have continued to receive overwhelming enthusiasm from our members in supporting the chapter’s community outreach efforts, especially during the 2012 holiday season.

Partners for Kids in Care

The chapter adopted four disadvantaged families through the DC Child & Family Services Agency’s Partners for Kids in Care. We donated hundreds of dollars in grocery gift cards and all the dry and canned goods for Thanksgiving dinner. Volunteers prepared and decorated large gift baskets and board members personally delivered them to appreciative families for the holiday.

During the Christmas holiday, we want to continue our support of those in need in our community, and have adopted seven disadvantaged families. Using the wish list provided by Partners for Kids in Care, the chapter donated $100 per child and each committee shopped for one family. The gift bundles will be personally delivered to the families by DC Chapter members.

Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC)

Children's Hospital Support LogoFor nine consecutive years, the DC Chapter celebrated the winter holidays by playing Santa to children at Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC). The 2012 benefit was hosted at the Bistro Bis at The George. Our holiday party attendees designed their own crafty cards and notes for hospitalized children that accompany toys and art supplies purchased by the chapter. This year’s event featured our third annual silent auction, which included items donated by our member firms such as Washington Redskins football tickets, Washington Capitals hockey tickets, great restaurant deals and more. The best part was brightening a child’s day and supporting such a worthwhile organization. In addition to the cards and toys provided to the children, $1,118.00 was raised by the 2012 silent auction and wine raffle. SMPS DC also made an $11,000 monetary donation the previous year and plans to make another generous donation for 2012.

Get Involved

Volunteering is a great way to up your level of engagement with SMPS. It allows you to meet fellow members and can help you feel more vested in the success of the chapter. We’ll need assistance organizing events throughout the year, such as 5K races for charity, community improvement days, delivering toys for the holidays, and student outreach programs, including scholarships and internships. We hope to work with other professional organizations on some of these efforts to increase networking opportunities for members, while giving back to our community.
