On May 25, 2011 the SMPS DC chapter held its first annual golf tournament at Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston, Virginia. Players of all talents eagerly signed up selling out the event with a field of 40 golfers, overflowing the standard full 9-hole course of 36. After a few announcements teams teed off at 1:30pm and played in a Shotgun Start format. The Shotgun Start is a style of tournament in which all groups tee off simultaneously from different holes allowing a tournament to end at the same time it takes one foursome to finish a full round, or in this case, a 9-hole round.

As the contest came to a close players were invited back to the clubhouse for a networking reception. Each foursome was also asked to submit their final score to the golf committee in order to rank and award prizes to those finishing lowest and highest. The winning team, including Deb Hayward of Studio39, Tara Connell of ECS Mid-Atlantic, Steve Floyd of BE&K Building Group and Kelley Milloy of BE&K Building Group, walked away with certificates from Golf Galaxy. The last place finishers, who will remain nameless, each received a children’s golf club set to help improve their talents for next year’s tournament.

Thank you to event sponsors Manhattan Construction, Balfour Beatty and WFT Engineering. A big thank you as well to the golf committee Tim Klabunde of William H. Gordon Associates and Katie Garrett of David M. Schwarz Architects for putting together a fantastic first tournament, one of many more to come!
