Favorite DC-area restaurant: I’d eat at Medium Rare once a week if I could. Their steak and frites never disappoint.

Favorite DC tourist destination: The FDR Memorial is a hidden gem.

Favorite travel destination: Having grown up in the Garden State, New Jersey’s beautiful beaches will always be my happy place.

Favorite book – business and/or pleasure: The Accidental Masterpiece by Michael Kimmelman (The New York Times architecture critic) provides a great perspective through which to view art and the world.

Food you always crave: I always seem to crave a greasy slice of plain pizza. Why are there so few pizza-by-the-slice places in the DC area?

Favorite celebrity/brand to follow on social: I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize my favorite team: @nationals.

Favorite app: Dark Sky is simply the best weather app.

Favorite movie: I am not embarrassed to admit that I love Top Gun and Airplane!

When I’m not at work you’ll find me: During non-pandemic times, I enjoy traveling, rock climbing and exploring new restaurants.

Dream job: I love being in marketing but in a parallel universe I’d be an anthropologist.

Let’s Get To It……

What got you into the AEC industry and what keeps you here?

I’ve always been inspired by the challenge of quantifying the value of design. My undergraduate degree is in Sociology and Art History which led me to marketing positions at the American Institute of Architects and subsequently Cooper Carry. Every day presents a new opportunity to advocate for good design.

When and why did you first join SMPS, and what keeps you coming back?

When I started at Cooper Carry 10 years ago, I was the only marketer in our Washington DC office. A colleague encouraged me to join SMPS. Membership allows me to access a wealth of resources, industry knowledge specific to my job and support that I continue to value today.

What advice do you have for our newer SMPS DC members about getting the most out of their membership?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! I have found SMPS members to be an incredible community of individuals who want to help each other succeed. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, advice or direction on how to navigate the organization.

What has been your favorite SMPS DC or SMPS event?

SMPS DC is such a strong chapter with great offerings but the Guru Guidance program is one of my favorites. I’ve been involved as both a mentee and a mentor over the years and have come away with industry knowledge, leadership skills and friendships.

Do you have your CPSM? If so, why did you get it and how has it impacted your career?

Four years ago, with some inspiration from a CPSM Happy Hour and a nudge from my supervisor, I decided to pursue my CPSM. Initially, I did not realize how much the designation would elevate my skills and advance my career. The study process reinforced some of my existing knowledge and introduced me to best practices that I continue to implement today. Earning the CPSM designation validated my expertise and helped me become the first marketer at Cooper Carry to be promoted to Associate.

What part of the SMPS mission to Advocate, Educate, and Connect most resonates with you and why?

Educate! I learn something new with every SMPS interaction, whether it be reading Marketer, attending events or meeting new contacts.

What is your favorite SMPS DC memory?

My first SMPS DC event was a higher education panel lunch. Even though it was 10 years ago, I still remember being impressed by the content and attendees.

Best work-related advice you’ve ever gotten?

It sounds obvious, but early in my career, my supervisor told me to always put yourself in the shoes of your audience. I have viewed marketing efforts through that lens ever since.
