As a new member of the Community Outreach Committee, I was eager to jump aboard the Open Architecture Collaborative group after SMPS had been invited to partner with them, especially when I saw it was for special events. It wasn’t until the first meeting I realized – wait, I have no idea what the Open Architecture Collaborative is, or what they even do. The other SMPS member involved felt the same, and it sort of became our main focus for the next several months: that every member in the design community would know what the Open Architecture Collaborative is and how they can be a part of the organization – whether they’re in the AEC industry or not!

SMPSDC and OADC members come together to plan the relaunch of Open Architecture DC

The Open Architecture Collaborative (OAC) is an independent, non-profit organization with chapters all over the world, from DC to Egypt to New Zealand. All chapters share a common goal: bring together architects, engineers, developers, community activists, general contractors, design enthusiasts, and more, to provide design advocacy, facilitation, assessment, and small build services to local marginalized neighborhoods.

The OAC’s DC Chapter (OADC) is working to broaden and expand their membership base. SMPS DC worked with the group to develop communications and outreach strategies to support that goal. Our weekly Thursday night meetings with OADC have been highly productive and successful, and a lot of are in the works.

A product of those meetings, we’re excited to announce our opener: the OADC Summer Happy Hour at Blackfinn Ameripub DC on Monday, June 27th!
