What You'll Learn

SMPS members who are currently in positions at firms in the A/E/C industry will be paired up with a mentor.

Mentors must be mid- to senior-level marketing or business development professionals with experience at A/E/C industry firms and members of SMPS.

The 2019-2020 program will combine all of the great benefits of Guru Guidance with three programs based off of the retired Leadership Development Series. The three programs will touch on career advancement, leadership, and communication. All prospective participants must complete an application that the committee will use to match mentor/mentee pairs based upon their background and career tracks. Following the matching process, applicants will receive notification of acceptance into the program and with whom they have been matched no later than Tuesday, October 22, 2019.

All accepted participants are invited to join the kickoff session scheduled for Tuesday, October 29 from 5-7 pm at DLR Group.

The guru guidance program is intended to be mutually beneficial for both the mentor and mentee. It exposes them to fresh perspectives, ideas, and approaches as well as the opportunity to reflect on their own goals and practices.

For the Mentor

  • Allows the mentor to give back to both SMPS and the mentee
  • Recognizes them as a subject matter expert and leader
  • Teaches the mentor about other areas of the industry
  • Helps re-energize the mentor's career
  • Develops their personal leadership and coaching styles

For the Mentee

  • Encourages the mentee to take better control of their career
  • Educates the mentee on how to accept feedback in important areas, such as communications, technical abilities, change management, and leadership skills
  • Provides an important networking contact for the mentee
  • Helps with clarifying career goals and course of action

To ensure that mentors and mentees get the most out of their Guru Guidance experience, mentees must meet the following minimum requirements to graduate from Guru Guidance at the end of the 2019-2020 Program Year:

  • All Guru Guidance participants must be SMPS members.
  • Though monthly meetings are strongly encouraged to get the most out of the Guru Guidance Program, the mentor and mentee must meet at least four times in person during the Guru Guidance calendar year. This is in addition to the Guru Guidance kick-off meeting and mid-year review.
