What You'll Learn

About the Projects

The first of the back-to-back guided tours will be led by HITT Contracting through Tysons Tower, the recently completed first phase of the mixed-use expansion. The 20-story commercial building is a high-end, high-performance space with exceptional amenities. Attendees will get an opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art corporate headquarters of Intelsat, the world’s leading provider of communications satellite services. Designed by Gensler, the new 200,000-SF headquarters features flexible, highly collaborative space. The design accentuates openness and accessibility in order to foster the exchange of creative ideas. Throughout the office space satellites hang from the ceiling, which is a fun reminder of the firm’s primary function. The space also features a replica of the Early Bird, which became the world’s first commercial communication satellite and went on to capture Neil Armstrong’s moon landing. The main command center houses over 50 television screens on one wall. These screens also have the ability to display one large image across multiple monitors, which can then track the location of Intelsat’s in-space satellites. Additional employee amenities include an onsite convenience store and rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Northern VA and Washington, DC.

The second tour will be led by RTKL, master planner of the site. RTKL’s relationship with Tysons Corner Center began in the 1980s when the firm designed the mall’s first expansion, doubling its size and adding a second level. In 2005, RTKL designed a renovation including 525,000 SF of new construction and the adaptive reuse of an existing department store and the addition of a 16-screen AMC Theater, restaurant court, two-level bookstore, and a seven-level parking deck. Most recently, RTKL led the 2007 master planning efforts that would initiate the four-phase expansion. RTKL is leading the design of the currently under-construction Hyatt Regency hotel, the 50,000-SF plaza, and renovation of the existing mall interior. A member of the RTKL team will be discussing the history of the Tysons development since the early 80s, how the area and project has evolved over the years and the current mixed-use expansion project.
