Pay it Forward Grant

Build Business is the SMPS Annual Conference that brings together 800+ AEC firm leaders, marketers, and business developers from across the country. If this sounds right up your alley but it didn’t make the budget, let us help. This all-expenses paid grant not only covers your conference registration, but airfare, hotel and meals as well. All you need to do is apply.

How it works

The call for grant applications goes out to all members every spring. All applications are reviewed by the Executive Committee, who then submits a recommendation to the Chapter’s Board of Directors. Upon approval, the grant recipient will be notified to get the ball rolling. The grant recipient will be presented the grant at the chapter's annual Summer Celebration event in June.

What it includes

  • Full registration for Wednesday through Saturday ($1,290 value)
  • Roundtrip airfare/transportation (up to $550 reimbursed)

  • Three-night hotel stay

  • Miscellaneous meals (up to $50 reimbursed)

Who can apply

  • Members of the DC chapter who can demonstrate active involvement in a committee or other support of chapter operations
  • Current DC member with minimum of two years of continuous membership in SMPS
  • Current board members are not eligible

What you'll need

  • Letter from your supervisor supporting your attendance and participation in Build Business, should you receive the grant
  • Letter of reference from a current or former DC chapter board member
  • Summary of your SMPS DC chapter activities and involvement to date
  • Responses to the following questions (limit to one page total):
    • How has SMPS benefitted you personally and professionally?
    • What do you hope to gain from attending the conference?
    • Where does SMPS bring you the most value?
    • If you feel you have anything else of value to share with the selection committee please include here.
  • Statement of understanding and agreement to attend a pre-conference, chapter-sponsored happy hour, live tweet from the conference, compose a post-conference debrief blog on the Best of Build Business and speak briefly at member orientations to share your impression of and experience at Build Business with others.
  • Description of your commitment to “pay it forward” to the DC chapter upon your return from Build Business. This is where the chapter is asking you to identify an idea, activity or project that you commit to completing within four months of the date of the conference, for the purpose of sharing what you have learned with others in the chapter. Any events with non-paid speakers (aka fellow conference attendees) should be organized prior to the conference to allow for adequate speaker preparation. Response limited to one page.
